"[It seems] as if the key to being true to yourself (and happiness? Come on!) is to identify some deep desire—that will, conveniently be accompanied by complimentary talent—and then to spin this into a livelihood. When those who are privileged enough to be able to choose between being an artist or a banker agonize, it shouldn’t be treated as some referendum on their souls…. I hate to sound so bitter! It just seems to me that life’s biggest, most important tests and choices have to do with learning how to deal with the limits, and how to handle the things you didn’t choose or plan. Don’t the really hard lessons involve figuring out how to put yourself and your wants second? Following your desires, for money or for fulfillment, is easy. Learning to adapt when you can’t follow them is hard, and developing into the kind of person who can pull it off with grace is, probably, a more important key to a a meaningful life than what path you choose if you randomly have the luck to do so. If you do, by all means choose wisely, but don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s the be-all end-all of who you are."
